Biography

Hello! I am Beccy [BEH-KEE] (she/her), a tea-drinking, book-hoarding, animal-loving science writer and content creator. I am originally from Wirral, UK (close to Liverpool) but now reside in Derbyshire.

I started my science journey at Keele University (near Alton Towers) to do a BSc in Human Biology and Forensic Science. During this time I fell in love with parasites and disease vectors and decided to do a MSc in Molecular Biology of Parasites and Disease Vectors from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. This intense one year programme allowed me to spend a summer collecting mosquitoes for insecticide resistance research in Burkina Faso … just to find out that I was allergic to mosquito bites.

I did a small stint at University of Liverpool as a research technician in a body biobank… so I got many buckets of human flesh to process. During that time I realised that I love research so decided to do a PhD in Biological Science from the University of East Anglia, where I spent 4 years trying to determine the early sex genes in Bemisia tabaci (the mosquito of the plant world).

My PhD allowed me to do many science communication stints and I fell in love and decided to make it a career. So after my PhD, I decided to work as a Science Content Creator at Technology Networks for two years.

Now, my current day job is at IFLScience, as a Custom Content Manager. I have been here since 2022 and have written over 140 stories for the site and for clients.

I am currently a member of the Association of British Science Writers and a qualified proofreader (College of Media and Publishing).
